Five Fun Ways to Learn Bible Verses for Kids - Plus FREE ABC Bible Memory Verse Cards | Bible Time
The Psalmist David wrote,
“Your word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11.
As parents, perhaps our most important job is teaching our children about God and providing them with the best opportunity to have a relationship with God. That relationship begins with His Word. Like King David, when we hide it in the hearts of our children, God’s word becomes their shield from sin. So how do we do that? Well we can start by teaching them Bible verses. I will share some helpful tips on starting out and FREE ABC Bible Scripture Cards (Click on the link below).
Tip 1: Make sure the verses are the appropriate length for your child. You want to select verses that they can relate to. Perhaps choosing a verse that applies to something that is relevant to them. For example, if a child battles with controlling their anger, being afraid, or jealousy, choosing a verse addressing those concerns will not only show that God cares about their needs but they can be reminded of it by memorizing the verses.
Tip 2: Try creating motions to go along with the words. Motions make memorizing Bible verses fun and easier to remember. It creates a “whole body” experience, their hands, feet, arms etc can all be involved. When that verse comes to mind it becomes an experience for them not just something they remember but something they physically do.
Tip 3: Writing, drawing or artwork creates another visual stimulus for our children. Some verses lend themselves better to this medium. Experiment with what works for you and your child.
Tip 4: One of my personal favorite ways to teach a Bible verse by song. Singing is another way to make memorizing verses fun. Who can resist a good song? Singing God’s word not only teaches the verse but “He puts a new song in my mouth…” Psalms 40:3.
No matter how you choose to introduce a Bible verse repetition is the key. When they wake up in the morning repeat the verse before they start the day. And before they go to bed at night repeat the Bible verse. Let memorizing Bible verses become a daily part of their life which means it must be a daily part of our lives as parents. Make sure you memorize it as well.
