How to Teach Kids the Bible (Simple Daily Routine)

Teaching kids (ages 9–12) the Bible doesn’t have to feel like a full lesson every day. A simple routine—done consistently—helps Scripture move from “something we read” to “something we live.” Below is an easy daily rhythm you can start this week, plus a few ready-to-use prompts and links to kid-friendly Bible tools.

The goal: small steps, every day

For 9–12 year olds, the sweet spot is short, repeatable, and interactive. You’re building habits: reading, understanding, talking, and applying. Aim for 10–15 minutes most days.

A simple daily routine (10–15 minutes)

1) Start with a 30-second prayer

Keep it simple and consistent. Example: “God, help us understand Your Word and follow You today. Amen.”

2) Read a short passage (5 minutes)

Pick a section that can be read in one sitting—about 8–15 verses. For this age, narrative passages work especially well (Gospels, Acts, Genesis, Exodus, Daniel).

Tip: Let your child read out loud every other day. It builds confidence and attention.

3) Ask 3 questions (3 minutes)

  • What happened? (retell it in your own words)

  • What does this show me about God?

  • What should I do today because of this?

4) Choose one “today step” (2 minutes)

Help them pick one specific action. Examples: apologize, tell the truth, include someone, pray for a friend, show kindness to a sibling, read one extra verse, etc.

5) Close with a 1-sentence prayer (30 seconds)

Example: “Jesus, help me do my today step: ______.”

Weekly add-ons (optional, but powerful)

  • Memory verse (2–3 minutes, 3x/week): write it, say it, explain it.

  • Family discussion night (10 minutes, 1x/week): “What’s one thing God taught you this week?”

  • Service challenge (1x/week): pick one small way to serve someone outside your home.

A 5-day starter plan (ages 9–12)

If you want to start immediately, try this simple week in the Gospel of Mark (short, action-packed stories):

  1. Day 1: Mark 1:16–20 (Following Jesus)

  2. Day 2: Mark 2:1–12 (Jesus forgives and heals)

  3. Day 3: Mark 4:35–41 (Jesus calms the storm)

  4. Day 4: Mark 5:21–24, 35–43 (Don’t be afraid)

  5. Day 5: Mark 6:30–44 (Jesus provides)

Make it stick: simple tips for this age

  • Let them lead sometimes: have them choose the passage once a week.

  • Use a notebook: one sentence summary + one “today step.”

  • Keep it real: share one way you’re trying to obey God too.

  • Celebrate consistency: track days on a calendar and reward effort (not perfection).
